Why This Site Exists
Dr. Mercer didn't start out wanting to build a website. He started out noticing the same look on patients' faces, appointment after appointment - the mix of worry and confusion that comes from hearing an unfamiliar diagnosis in a ten-minute visit.
Over twenty years of comprehensive ophthalmology, he found that the patients who understood their condition, even loosely, tended to make calmer decisions and follow through on treatment more consistently. Explanation was doing as much work as medicine.
This site is his attempt to give that explanation more room than a clinic visit allows: plain-language guides to cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye, and the other conditions he sees most often, written the way he'd explain them to a patient sitting across the desk.
